Well I mashed the 'buy' button today on a lens that has never really even been on my radar.

Yep, a macro lens. I have always wanted to play with a true macro lens but never really much interest in macro. I think Mokai's bug pics may have inspired me b/c honestly flowers do nothing for me. My wife also has a project for me for a collage of baby pics of mah boy that a macro would be ideal for. I could do it with a normal lens and crop but a macro would be ideal.

What sealed the deal for me is the fact that I can also use this as an outdoor portrait lens. Its the only Macro I could find with fast USM focus and internal focusing design.

My reasoning is right now this is a better deal than a rental. I checked used prices on POTN and they seem to avg around $420. So with Canons instant rebates right now I picked it up new at newegg for $459 on my preferred account with no pmnts or interest for 6 mos. So, i figure I will play with it for 4 months or so and then just turn around and sell it used and lose $50-$60 on it. If I absolutely love it, I will just pay for it I guess.  I doubt it though as Macro isn't really my thing and I know next to nothing about how to shoot macro, but it might grow on me, ya never know.

Congrats..

I have a feeling it will grow on you..It did for me..What I like about macro is it reveals a whole new world that is normally over looked..
Just a small section in your back yard now will give you hours of shooting pleasure..And like you said they are very versatile lenses..
I look forward to seeing what you come up with using this new lens..100mm is a good focal length too..Gives you a decent working distance when you are at minimum focus distance..Also they are nice because they are sharp across the entire frame..

Have fun..

Bad idea, I dont think you can ever get all the dirt of a off road bike once its been in a good mudder. I do have a few other hobby items around the house that will be great to play name that macro item with.

Yea, I chalked it up to you thinking there was an ignorance on my part in that there is actually a difference between the 4. Given your OCD like attention to detail and accuracy.  cheers

I don't know, but I do know you need to polish your brass better.   Good way to jam up your rifle.   Billy

I believe the offical NATO 5.56 is M855 so that's my guess.

Hey its military ammo made by the million or something. You dont expect it to be affordable, loaded very hot, AND pretty do you? One difference in the 5.56 and the .223 is the chamber on the 5.56 is a very loose chamber. So brass thats been banged around or is slightly out of spec still functions fine. The dent right behind the crimp is what happens everytime a round is ejected from the chamber so that was probably done when I ejected it to take its portrait.

This is actually M193, 855 is currently what is being issued. I am not sure if any 193 is being shipped at all or not. It certainly should be as 855 performs like ass out of a 14.5"bbl and why I have 193 instead of the heavier, slower 855.

I just grabbed the snaps at lunch. I went home since I knew my lens was probably sitting on my front porch and that makes me nervous. I had it shipped to the house b/c I figured it would be here when I was off work but I forgot about the holiday weekend thing. So I just mounted up the lens and put it at min focus distance which is nicely labeled 1:1 on the distance scale and snapped a few in cam jpegs. The first one is f8 and the 2nd is f11.. .I think. I am kind of amazed it how little depth of field there is at f8, even f11 for that matter. I knew it would be shallow at 1:1 but I expected maybe a tad more.

I really like the build quality, the fast USM is very nice and it seems like a good length.
