A friend of mine turned me onto this one artist - Alexandre Duret-Lutz - who has created some fantastic spherical panoramas.  I think I might have seen this before, but this guy's style is great.  Most sphericals usually have something very non-distinct in the center and around the edges, but this guy tries to include clouds, and the ground - very cool.  Check it out:

My friend also linked me to a tutorial that I think is a good starting place, but clearly there's more that can be done to make the image unique:

Holy cow.  Totally awesome.

I'm having a terrible day at work, and pictures this inspiring aren't helping things.  I'm stuck doing this crap while someone is getting paid to make beautiful art like that.

 Those are awesome.

Hmm, gives me an idea. The same type of compositions only made up of human body parts instead of structures.

I'll go first.... Just kidding, I better not.

Hah hah!, I too have figured this out (to a very basic extent) and you can too.

This photographer / artist uses a slightly different technique, but you can too if you use Photoshop.

First:  Download "Flexify 2" (free download) http://www.flamingpear.com/download.html

Second:  Load it into Photoshop.  (preferences > plug-ins > click "other folder or something")

Third:  Experiment with the settings of the filter in PS.    More on this later.   Here is an explanation to help you get started:  http://photojojo.com/content/tutorials/create-your-own-panorama-planets/
