A few words from the photographer:
Thank you for voting and leaving comments in the photo challenge. I've selected these photos from a 2 week road trip through Arizona and Utah. The landscape lends itself to spectacular photo opportunities, but the real challenge, at least to me, was to capture viewpoints that had not been shot by the previous 10 million tourists.
The lizard shot was taken at mid-morning as I was hiking down a steep path on the way to Canyon X. The path was in deep shadow except for a vertical rock wall facing the morning sun. A lizard scampered in the sunlit wall, just about eye level, not more than 10 feat away. I had a wide-angle zoom lens on, and didn't think I had time to switch out to a macro lens. I crept up slowly to the target, framing and shooting as I moved closer. After taking about a dozen shots and I decided to switch lenses. When I moved away, the lizard shot straight up towards the top of the wall and out of sight. I guess the lesson I took away that day is that it is better to shoot with a wrong lens than to let a kodak moment slip away.
As the shortest day of the year is fast approaching, it got me thinking about night photography. So the Nov/Dec theme will be pictures taken between sun down and sun up, with no on-camera flash and a minimum exposure time of 15 seconds.
